Pre-Diabetes: What this Diagnosis Means for You

Pre-diabetes is a condition that exists before the development of Type 2 diabetes in most all cases. If you have been diagnosed as prediabetic, there's no guarantee that you will get full-blown diabetes but there is a good chance. Learning how to effectively manage your condition can help you avoid complications and reduce your chance of future problems. Not sure if you fall into the prediabetic range? There are two tests that your doctor may administer.

One is called the fasting plasma glucose test and it is given before any food or drink is consumed. Results 100 mg or less are normal, while results between 100 and 126 mg are indicative of a prediabetic condition. Anything above 126 is considered diabetic. The other test that may be administered is the oral glucose tolerance test. This test is done a specified time after food or beverages are consumed. A reading between 140 and 200 is considered prediabetic for this test.

The good news for those diagnosed as prediabetic is that this condition can be alleviated with healthy diet and sufficient exercise. Staying at a healthy body weight, avoiding sugar and fat, and getting enough cardio several times per week can lower your blood glucose levels and keep them down. Keeping your glucose levels at a normal level is very important when it comes to avoiding Type 2 diabetes. Your doctor will recommend ways for you to manage your blood sugar levels naturally with nutrition and activity. Even a daily walk can go a long way towards reducing your risk of Type 2 diabetes.

It is important to not only live a healthy lifestyle, but also go for regular screenings after your diagnosis of pre-diabetes. Your doctor will recommend that you are tested once or twice a year if you are pre-diabetic. If you want to test your own blood sugar at home, there are a variety of home testing kits that are affordable and easy to use. Testing your blood sugar at home involves drawing one drop of blood, placing it on a test strip and inserting it into a testing meter. Getting a readout takes just seconds. The more you know about your blood sugar and what affects it, the better equipped you are to deal with your condition and keep it from getting worse.
