Diabetes Treatments: What You Should Know

If you are looking for the best diabetes treatments, the first thing you should do is visit your doctor. The type of treatments you need will depend on the type of diabetes you have and how severe it is. Two of the most common types of diabetes are Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes used to be called juvenile diabetes because it is usually diagnosed during childhood. Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, is usually diagnosed during the adult years. Some pregnant women may suffer from gestational diabetes. This type of diabetes occurs during pregnancy and often disappears afterwards. Finally, there's a condition called pre-diabetes that can affect anyone. Pre-diabetes means that your blood sugar is elevated but not at a diabetic level yet.

For each of these types of diabetes, there are different things to consider. Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, a test kit is necessary. Your doctor will test your blood sugar, but you will also need to test it at home. With a test kit, you draw your own blood using a lancet, place it on the test strip and insert the strip into the testing machine. You will then receive a readout that is either digital or color coded, depending on the type of kit you purchase. When you need more strips or lancets, you can of course purchase them separately. If you feel uncomfortable drawing your own blood, ask a friend or relative to assist you until you get used to the process. Eventually, it will become second nature.

In addition to a test kit, you may need insulin. Many Type 1 and some Type 2 diabetes sufferers must take insulin in either injectable or inhalant form. Your doctor will tell you if you need insulin, and if so, how to perform the administration process. Glucose tablets may also be needed, especially when hypoglycemia is a concern. Some diabetics also need to test their urine in addition to their blood. There are easy to use urine testing kits that are designed to measure the ketone level of the urine. All of these supplies can be purchased at most any diabetic supply store or pharmacy.

Diabetes treatments may not always include the injection of insulin. Many diabetics with Type 2, gestational or pre-diabetes can manage their conditions simply with proper diet and enough exercise. It is very important to attend regular checkups and communicate with your doctor on a regular basis. While diabetes is a serious issue, many people are able to effectively cope with their condition and lead healthy, normal lives.
